The alleged plot to blow up transatlantic airliners and last year's terrorist attacks on London have made more people fear Islam as a religion, not merely its extremist elements, a poll for The Daily Telegraph has found.
A growing number of people fear that the country faces "a Muslim problem" and more than half of the respondents to the YouGov survey said that Islam posed a threat to Western liberal democracy.

أثّر حزب الأخوان المسلمين بعمق على الحياة السياسية في الشرق الأوسط منذ تأسيسه في عام 1928. يقول شعار الحزب: "الله غايتنا. النبي قائدنا. القرآن قانوننا. الجهاد طريقنا. الموت في سبيل الله بغيتنا"[i]. وبينما شكّلت الأفكار المتطرفة للإخوان معتقدات أجيال من الإسلامويين، إلا أنها فقدت، خلال العقدين الأخيرين، بعضاً من قوتها وجاذبيتها في الشرق الأوسط، إذ حطمها القمع العنيف من قبل الأنظمة المحلية، وأهملتها الأجيال الجديدة من الإسلامويين الذين فضلوا عليها تنظيمات أكثر تطرفاً في الغالب.
بيد أن الشرق الأوسط هو جزء واحد من العالم الإسلامي. فقد غدت أوروبا مِفرخة للفكر الإسلامي والتطور السياسي. فمنذ الستينيات، انتقل أعضاء من حزب الأخوان المسلمين والمتعاطفين معهم إلى أوروبا وأسسوا ببطء ولكن بثبات شبكة واسعة وحسنة التنظيم من المساجد، والجمعيات الخيرية والمنظمات الإسلامية. وبخلاف المجتمع الإسلامي الكبير، قد لا تكون الغاية النهائية للإخوان المسلمين هي "مساعدة المسلمين لكي يحققوا أفضل مواطنة يقدرون عليها"، الأحرى أن غايتهم هي نشر الشريعة الإسلامية في أوروبا والولايات المتحدة[ii].
